Introduction: Excel Information Functions

Excel includes a rich set of information functions that can transform your raw data into meaningful patterns. Start with helpful Excel functions like CELL, INFO, and ERROR.TYPE.

Next, explore other information functions like SHEET and SHEETS, ISFORMULA, and more.

This guide will give you a quick overview of Excel's information functions, and will lead you to in-depth articles, where you'll find detailed examples, step-by-step videos, and sample files to download.

CELL and INFO Function

With the CELL function in Excel, you can get 13 different types of information about a specific cell on the worksheet. For example, get the cell's address, number format, or sheet name.

To see a quick overview of the CELL function's uses, watch this short video. There is a CELL example below the video, and links to more count function examples.

Example - CELL - Number Format

With "format" as its info_type argument, you can use the CELL function to show the number format of a cell.

For example, in the screen shot below, cell B7 has the General number format

In cell C4, the result of the CELL formula is "G", for General:

  • =CELL("format",C2)

More Information - CELL and INFO Functions

The Excel INFO function is similar to the CELL function, and it returns 7 different types of information about the current operating environment. For example, get the Excel version, or the current recalculation mode.
